Engine Tuning & ECU Remapping

ECU Remapping • Bespoke Calibration • Rolling Road Development

TuningWorx provides engine tuning and ECU calibration for standard and modified petrol and diesel vehicles.

Not every vehicle needs the same level of calibration. A standard vehicle requiring a straightforward performance remap is very different from a modified petrol engine requiring individual calibration and rolling-road development.

For this reason, TuningWorx offers three distinct levels of engine tuning.

TuningWorx IQ™ Remap — From £199

IQ™ is our entry-level ECU remapping service for suitable standard vehicles.

It provides a cost-effective performance calibration without the additional time and development involved in our individually calibrated ET™ services.

Before programming, we identify the vehicle, ECU and available programming method.

Where supported, the ECU can be programmed through the vehicle's diagnostic connection. Some ECUs require Bench access, Boot access or a separate unlocking procedure, which involves additional work and cost.

TuningWorx ET™ Remap — From £425

ET™ is our individually developed engine calibration service.

Rather than treating every example of a particular model as identical, the calibration is developed around the vehicle, its engine specification and the required result.

This is particularly suitable for petrol engines, modified vehicles and applications where an off-the-shelf calibration is not appropriate.

The objective isn't simply maximum power. Throttle response, torque delivery, fuelling, ignition control, drivability and engine protection all form part of a properly developed calibration.

TuningWorx ET™ Dyno Remap — From £575

ET™ Dyno combines individual ECU calibration with development and measurement on our in-house rolling road.

The rolling road allows us to operate the engine under controlled load while measuring how the vehicle responds to calibration changes.

Depending on the engine management system and application, this can include assessment of:

  • Power and torque
  • Air/fuel ratio
  • Boost control
  • Fuel delivery
  • Ignition timing
  • Throttle response
  • Power delivery throughout the operating range

Changes can then be evaluated using measured results rather than assumptions.

OBD, Bench, Boot and ECU Unlocking

Modern ECUs cannot all be accessed in the same way.

OBD programming communicates with the ECU through the vehicle's diagnostic connection and is normally the simplest method where supported.

Bench programming requires direct communication with the ECU outside the normal vehicle diagnostic connection.

Boot programming provides lower-level access to the ECU and is used where the required operation cannot be performed using the normal OBD or Bench protocol.

Some protected ECUs also require an unlock procedure before subsequent programming becomes possible.

TuningWorx uses professional ECU programming equipment including bFlash, AutoTuner, Alientech KESS3, Magic Motorsport FLEX and other specialist equipment.

The exact ECU and appropriate programming method are confirmed before programming.

We Don't Guess ECU Compatibility

The vehicle model, engine size and power output don't necessarily identify exactly which ECU is fitted.

Manufacturers can use several ECU versions, processors and software variants during the production life of apparently identical vehicles.

Programming support also changes as equipment manufacturers develop new protocols and unlocking methods.

The TuningWorx Vehicle Lookup combines vehicle identification with our continually updated ECU and programming-tool data to help identify the available options.

Where a tool manufacturer describes a programming protocol as Beta, TuningWorx identifies it as Beta rather than presenting it as established support.

Standard and Modified Engines

Modified engines require considerably more consideration than standard vehicles.

We regularly work with engines incorporating changes such as:

  • Performance exhaust systems
  • Sports catalytic converters
  • Induction systems
  • Performance camshafts
  • Larger injectors
  • Upgraded intercoolers
  • Supercharger conversions
  • Turbocharger upgrades

Changes to engine hardware can affect airflow, fuelling, boost control, ignition requirements and engine protection strategies.

The calibration therefore needs to take account of the complete engine specification rather than simply increasing predetermined values in the ECU.

Petrol Engine Calibration

Petrol engine calibration remains one of our specialist areas.

We work with naturally aspirated, turbocharged and supercharged engines, including standard vehicles, modified engines, classic performance vehicles and specialist conversions.

Our engineering and diagnostic background also allows us to investigate problems which need to be corrected before calibration begins.

Safe, Reliable Performance

Maximum power is only one part of engine calibration.

Cold starting, idle quality, throttle response, fuelling, ignition control, temperature management and consistent power delivery can be just as important.

A remap cannot repair an underlying mechanical or electronic fault. Where necessary, problems are diagnosed before calibration rather than attempting to disguise them with software changes.

Check Your Vehicle

The TuningWorx Vehicle Lookup can identify the tuning information currently available for your vehicle, including standard and tuned performance data, likely ECU, programming support and available TuningWorx services.

Where we don't have enough verified information to make a reliable match, we don't guess. The application can be checked manually.

Enter your registration in the Vehicle Lookup to see the options available for your vehicle.
