Repair Rather Than Replace Where Practical
Modern vehicles rely on electronic control units for engine management, transmission operation, body systems, communications, charging and many other functions.
When a control unit fails, replacement isn't necessarily the only solution.
TuningWorx provides component-level testing and repair of automotive electronic modules, combining vehicle diagnostics with electronic engineering and bench testing.
Where practical, our objective is to identify the actual failure and repair the original unit rather than automatically replacing it.
Component-Level Electronic Diagnosis
Electronic control-unit repair requires considerably more than identifying visibly damaged components.
A failure may involve power supplies, communication circuits, output drivers, internal processing, damaged PCB tracks or components which fail only under particular operating conditions.
Depending on the unit and fault, our work can include:
- PCB inspection
- Component-level fault diagnosis
- Power-supply testing
- Driver-circuit testing
- CAN communication testing
- Electronic component replacement
- PCB and track repair
- Bench testing
- Software assessment where appropriate
- Post-repair testing
Every unit and failure is assessed individually.
Automotive Control Units
We work with a wide range of automotive electronics, including:
- Engine Control Units (ECUs)
- Transmission Control Units (TCUs)
- Body Control Modules
- Jaguar Land Rover electronic modules
- 48V/12V DC-DC converters
- Classic engine-management electronics
- Specialist automotive control modules
Repair capability depends on the particular unit and the nature of the failure.
If you have a module that isn't listed, contact us with the vehicle details, control-unit part number and fault information.
Jaguar Land Rover Electronics
Jaguar and Land Rover electronic systems are a particular area of experience.
Our workshop has manufacturer-level diagnostic and programming capability alongside component-level electronic testing facilities.
This is important because successful module repair isn't simply about repairing a circuit board. The control unit may also need to communicate correctly with other vehicle systems and, depending on the application, require configuration or programming.
JLR 48V DC-DC Converter Repair
We provide specialist testing and repair of suitable Jaguar Land Rover mild-hybrid 48V to 12V DC-DC converters.
These units form an important part of the MHEV electrical system, transferring energy from the 48V system to support the conventional 12V electrical network.
Our work includes bench testing and component-level investigation rather than simply replacing the converter because a related fault code has been stored.
Not every failed converter is repairable. Units are assessed individually and we will not claim a repair is possible where testing shows otherwise.
Diagnosis Before Condemning a Control Unit
A fault code referring to an ECU or communication problem doesn't automatically prove that the control unit itself is defective.
External problems can include:
- Incorrect power supply
- Poor earth connections
- Wiring faults
- CAN communication problems
- Shorted actuators
- Sensor faults
- Water ingress
- Previous incorrect repairs
- Other control units affecting communication
Where the vehicle is available to us, these possibilities can be investigated before removing or condemning the module.
For units sent to us separately, the information supplied about the original vehicle fault becomes particularly important.
Bench Testing
Some electronic faults can be investigated with the control unit removed from the vehicle.
Where appropriate, we construct or use bench connections to provide the required power supplies, communication and operating conditions necessary to test the unit.
The extent of bench testing possible varies considerably between control units.
A successful bench test therefore doesn't automatically prove that every function of a complex module will operate correctly in the vehicle.
Software, Programming and Configuration
Not every apparent ECU failure is a hardware problem.
Depending on the control unit, diagnosis may also involve consideration of software, configuration, coding or communication with other modules.
TuningWorx has access to professional programming equipment and manufacturer-level diagnostic systems for supported vehicles.
Hardware repair and vehicle programming are treated as related but separate operations — we don't assume that replacing an electronic component automatically completes the repair.
Original Control Unit Where Possible
Retaining the original control unit can have significant advantages.
Depending on the vehicle, replacement modules may require programming, coding, security configuration or transfer of vehicle-specific information.
Repairing the original module can avoid some of these complications while also reducing unnecessary replacement of expensive electronic assemblies.
It isn't always possible, however, and replacement remains the correct solution where a unit is damaged beyond reliable repair.
Information We Need
For electronic testing or repair enquiries, please provide as much information as possible:
- Vehicle make and model
- Registration or VIN where appropriate
- Control-unit part number
- Fault codes
- Description of the symptoms
- Previous diagnosis or repairs
- Whether the vehicle starts and drives
- Whether the unit has previously been opened or repaired
Good information at the beginning can considerably reduce unnecessary investigation.
Electronic Engineering, Not Parts Swapping
Our approach is simple:
Confirm the fault. Understand the circuit. Repair where practical. Test the result.
Replacing an expensive control unit without establishing why it failed can waste money and, where an external fault caused the original failure, potentially damage the replacement as well.
Need Help With an Electronic Control Unit?
If you have a suspected failed ECU, TCU or other automotive electronic module, contact us with the vehicle details, part number, fault codes and a description of the symptoms.
For loose units, clear photographs of the module and identification labels are particularly useful.
We can then advise whether the appropriate route is vehicle diagnosis, bench testing, component-level repair, programming, cloning or replacement.
