What is live ECU calibration?
Live ECU calibration allows the Lucas 14CUX engine management system to be tuned while the engine is running on our four-wheel-drive rolling road. Using the EVC OLS300 development system, changes are applied to the calibration in real time and immediately verified under controlled operating conditions. This development process allows every adjustment to be tested before moving on to the next stage, producing a calibration tailored to the individual engine rather than relying on a generic replacement EPROM.
Why Live ECU Calibration Is Better Than a Generic EPROM
No two Rover V8 engines are exactly the same. Engine capacity, compression ratio, camshaft profile, cylinder head modifications, injectors, exhaust system, air intake design and even normal engine wear all influence the fuel requirements.
A generic replacement EPROM is developed to suit a wide range of vehicles and can only ever be a compromise. Live ECU calibration allows the fuel maps to be optimised for the individual engine while it is running on the rolling road, producing accurate air/fuel ratios, improved drivability and reliable performance throughout the operating range.
THE EVC OLS300 DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM
The EVC OLS300 is a professional ECU development system designed specifically for live engine calibration. It allows changes to the Lucas 14CUX calibration to be made while the engine is running, with every adjustment immediately verified on our four-wheel-drive rolling road.
Unlike programming an EPROM and then carrying out another dyno run to see if the changes have worked, live calibration allows the fuel maps to be refined continuously until the required air/fuel ratio, drivability and performance have been achieved.
This development process is faster, more accurate and produces a calibration that is tailored specifically to the individual engine.
THE EVC OLS300 DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM
The EVC OLS300 is a professional ECU development system that allows changes to the Lucas 14CUX calibration while the engine is running on our four-wheel-drive rolling road.
Every adjustment is applied immediately and verified under controlled operating conditions. This allows the calibration to be refined progressively until the required air/fuel ratios, drivability and performance have been achieved.
Unlike repeatedly removing and reprogramming an EPROM between dyno runs, live calibration provides immediate feedback, making the development process faster, more accurate and more efficient.
WHAT WE ASSESS DURING LIVE CALIBRATION
Every engine is assessed individually and no two calibration sessions are exactly the same.
During development we monitor and evaluate:
- Air/fuel ratio throughout the operating range
- Idle quality and idle stability
- Cold starting and warm-up characteristics
- Part-throttle drivability
- Cruise fuelling
- Wide open throttle fuelling
- Throttle response
- Engine load
- Injector duty cycle
- Fuel consumption
- Overall drivability
Any mechanical or electrical issues identified during testing are investigated before calibration continues.
WHO BENEFITS FROM LIVE ECU CALIBRATION?
Live ECU calibration is suitable for both standard and modified Rover V8 engines, including:
- Standard Lucas 14CUX vehicles
- Engine rebuilds
- Increased capacity engines
- Modified camshafts
- Performance cylinder heads
- Larger fuel injectors
- Custom-built Rover V8 engines
- Vehicles fitted with aftermarket exhaust systems
- Vehicles with induction modifications
Because every engine is different, every calibration is developed to suit the individual vehicle rather than applying a generic solution.
DIAGNOSTICS BEFORE CALIBRATION
Successful calibration depends upon a mechanically sound engine.
Before calibration begins we assess the overall condition of the vehicle, including the ignition system, fuel delivery, intake system and engine management sensors.
If faults are identified they should be corrected before calibration, ensuring the finished result reflects the true capability of the engine rather than compensating for underlying problems.
Our objective is to optimise a healthy engine, not disguise mechanical defects.
OUR APPROACH
Live ECU calibration is a development process rather than a simple tuning session.
Every change is based on measured data collected while the vehicle is operating under load on our rolling road. Adjustments are made progressively, verified immediately and refined until the desired result has been achieved.
This diagnostic-led approach produces a calibration that is tailored specifically to the individual engine, providing smooth drivability, accurate fuelling and reliable performance.
WHY CHOOSE TURNER PERFORMANCE?
At Turner Performance we specialise in the Lucas 14CUX engine management system.
Rather than supplying generic replacement EPROMs, we develop bespoke calibrations using professional EVC OLS300 development equipment and verify every change on our four-wheel-drive rolling road.
Every engine presents its own characteristics and requirements.
Every engine is different. Every calibration should be too.
