Custom ZF Transmission Calibration
TuningWorx develops ZF transmission calibrations in-house for supported applications.
Rather than being limited to predetermined tuning stages, we can calibrate the transmission to suit the individual vehicle, engine output, modifications and required driving characteristics.
This is particularly important on modified vehicles, where the engine ECU and transmission TCU need to operate as a coordinated system.
Our objective isn't simply to produce the fastest or hardest possible gear change. A properly developed transmission calibration should improve the way the gearbox responds while maintaining drivability and appropriate transmission protection.
What Can Be Calibrated?
The available calibration parameters depend on the particular transmission, software version and vehicle application.
Depending on the system, our custom ZF calibration work can include:
- Torque management
- Transmission torque limits
- Clutch pressure and control
- Shift timing
- Shift strategy
- Gear selection
- Drive-mode behaviour
- Sport-mode behaviour
- Manual-mode operation
- Paddle response
- Kickdown strategy
- Torque converter operation
- Torque converter lock-up
- Shift points
- Launch characteristics where supported
We don't apply the same changes to every vehicle.
The calibration is developed according to the transmission, engine output, vehicle specification and required result.
Engine & Transmission Calibration Together
Modern engine and transmission controllers continuously exchange information.
Engine torque is communicated to the transmission and used as part of clutch control, shift management, gear selection and transmission protection.
This relationship becomes increasingly important when engine output is increased.
Simply increasing transmission torque limits without considering the engine calibration does not necessarily produce the best result.
Where we are calibrating both systems, TuningWorx can develop the engine ECU and transmission TCU together, allowing torque delivery and transmission behaviour to be considered as one complete drivetrain.
ZF 8HP Calibration
The ZF 8HP family is used extensively across BMW and many other performance vehicles.
Its sophisticated electronic control provides considerable scope for calibration.
Depending on the application and required result, our in-house 8HP calibration can alter characteristics such as:
- Gear selection
- Shift points
- Shift speed and timing
- Clutch pressure
- Torque management
- Torque converter lock-up
- Part-throttle behaviour
- Full-throttle behaviour
- Sport-mode strategy
- Manual-mode response
- Paddle response
- Kickdown operation
A road vehicle, high-performance road car and heavily modified vehicle do not necessarily require the same transmission behaviour.
That is why we approach the calibration according to the individual application.
ZF 6HP Calibration
The ZF 6HP family is found in many earlier BMW and other performance applications.
These transmissions can also benefit considerably from appropriate calibration, particularly where engine output has been increased.
Depending on the particular application, calibration can address torque management, shift behaviour, converter operation, gear selection and other transmission strategies.
As with the 8HP, we identify the exact transmission and software before determining what calibration options are available.
Clutch Pressure & Increased Engine Torque
Increased engine torque places greater demand on the transmission's clutch packs.
On suitable applications, clutch pressure and associated control strategies can be calibrated to suit increased torque.
This is not simply a matter of commanding maximum pressure.
Pressure, shift behaviour, torque management and engine torque delivery all interact, and changes need to be appropriate for the particular transmission and application.
Software also cannot compensate for mechanically worn clutches or an otherwise defective transmission.
Torque Converter Calibration
Torque converter operation has a significant influence on the way a ZF automatic transmission feels and responds.
The lock-up strategy affects engine speed, response, refinement and how directly engine torque is transferred through the drivetrain.
Where supported, torque converter operation can be incorporated into our custom calibration.
The objective is to achieve appropriate converter behaviour for the vehicle rather than simply forcing the converter to lock as early as possible.
Custom Calibration for Modified Vehicles
Our in-house calibration capability becomes particularly useful where a vehicle has been modified beyond a straightforward engine remap.
This may include vehicles with:
- Increased engine torque
- Turbocharger upgrades
- Engine modifications
- Bespoke ECU calibration
- Track or competition requirements
- Non-standard drivetrain requirements
In these applications, the transmission calibration can be developed around the actual engine and vehicle rather than relying solely on a predetermined transmission tuning package.
xHP Transmission Tuning
TuningWorx also offers xHP transmission tuning for supported BMW applications.
xHP is a well-established transmission tuning platform and provides an effective solution for many standard and modified BMW vehicles.
For vehicles where the available xHP calibration options suit the required result, it can provide a straightforward and proven solution.
Where a vehicle requires more individual development, particularly alongside bespoke engine calibration or significant modifications, our in-house custom ZF calibration provides an alternative.
We can therefore select the approach according to the vehicle rather than being restricted to one transmission tuning system.
Standard Vehicles
A vehicle does not have to be heavily modified to benefit from transmission calibration.
On suitable standard vehicles, changes to shift strategy, gear selection, torque converter behaviour and manual-mode response can substantially alter how the vehicle drives without changing the engine calibration.
The required result is discussed before calibration so that the transmission isn't simply made unnecessarily aggressive.
Diagnostics Before Calibration
A transmission should be mechanically and electronically healthy before performance calibration.
Where appropriate, our diagnostic assessment can include:
- Transmission fault codes
- Live transmission data
- Adaptation values
- Operating temperatures
- Engine torque data
- Transmission torque data
- Road testing
- Transmission behaviour under load
Existing mechanical or hydraulic problems should be diagnosed rather than concealed through software changes.
ZF TCU Programming, Cloning & Replacement
Performance calibration is separate from TCU programming and replacement.
TuningWorx also provides programming, cloning, recovery and replacement services for supported transmission control units.
Where a transmission controller has failed, retain the original unit. Even if it no longer operates correctly in the vehicle, it may contain data required to successfully prepare a replacement.
See our TCU Programming & Cloning service for further information.
BMW & ZF Gearbox Tuning Enquiries
If you are considering ZF transmission tuning, send us your vehicle registration together with details of the vehicle and any engine or transmission modifications.
If the engine ECU has already been remapped, tell us who carried out the calibration and what modifications have been made.
We can then identify the transmission, available programming methods and whether in-house custom calibration or xHP is the appropriate route.
